Traffic backed up on The Lakes Way after car fire

A male driver is lucky to be alive after his car went up in flames near the tip outside of Tuncurry this morning.

Escaping the vehicle before the fire began, the man walked away from the incident without any injuries.

Minor road damage has resulted where the fire occurred on The Lakes Way.

Local police and NSW RFS crews were called to the scene just before 9am, with two firetrucks rushing to extinguish the blaze.

The car was well alight when firefighters arrived, before being completely destroyed by the blaze.

The Lakes Way was briefly closed to traffic in both directions, while authorities contained the incident.

The closure caused delays for road users, with traffic backing up in both directions, but is back open as normal now.

The burnt-out vehicle was taken from the scene via tow truck.

Police investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
