“The young person left the scene, however, was arrested by police a short time later on Keech St, Wingham.”

Jorja Bailey, who lives nearby, said her brother attended the school and the incident had the community on edge.

“It was scary as – my brother goes there,” she said.

“We heard the intercom and voices over the speakers down there, and the lockdown siren. I was told both Wingham Brush Public and the high school (Wingham High School) were in lockdown

“In today’s day and age I had a feeling it was something like what happened. With the way the school is it’s only a matter of time before someone got hurt.”

The NSW Education Department has been contacted for comment.

Late in the day, NSW Police stated a 14-year-old boy had been hit with various charges.

He is accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of going armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and using a knife in a public place causing a person to fear for their safety.

The boy was refused bail to face Children’s Court on Wednesday.
