An allegedly drunk driver lost control and veered off the road, slamming into trees on the state’s Mid-North Coast late on Thursday night.

When NSW Paramedics were called to the scene near Crescent Head they found the driver at the wheel and a dog on board.

It’s already been a horror start to the holiday period with multiple deaths and injuries and police have urged motorists to be extra vigilant during the festive period.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison has reminded road users that sadly six people died as a result of crashes on our roads during the Christmas and New Year double demerit period last year.

“It’s easy to become complacent about road safety, but unsafe driving can have tragic consequences,” Ms Aitchison said.

“I urge everyone to obey the road rules and make safe decisions every time you’re behind the wheel, so everyone can reach their destinations safely to enjoy the holidays with their loved ones.”

According to a NSW Police spokesperson, when officers arrived at the scene of the smash along Crescent Head Rd near the intersection with Beranghi Rd about 11.30pm they found a BMW smashed into trees down an embankment.

The spokesperson said the 49-year-old male driver was breath tested at the scene and returned a positive result.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him for back pain before he was taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital for further treatment and blood alcohol testing.

Police inquiries are ongoing.

Operation Christmas/New Year 2024 will conclude at 11.59pm on January 1.

Double demerit points will apply for the duration of the operation for speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt, and motorcycle helmet offences.
