Tony Abbott’s vote was down across Warringah with the biggest swings against him in some of the electorate’s wealthiest — and traditionally Liberal — neighbourhoods.

At the time of writing Zali Steggall had captured 44.63 per cent of the first preference vote compared to Mr Abbott’s 38.96 per cent.

This was down 12.69 per cent down on 2016 when he gathered 51.65 per cent of first preference.

Among the polling centres where his percentage plummeted most dramatically was

Balgowlah Heights where he dropped from 61.04 per cent in 2016 to 39.73 per cent, a 21.31 per cent fall in first preference.

It was a similar story at North Balgowlah, close to Ms Steggall’s home, where his vote fell from 50.71 per cent to 34.12 per cent, a 16.60 per cent fall.

At nearby Beauty Point he lost 17.29 per cent falling from 60.45 per cent in 2016 to 43.12 per cent.

He also lost ground in Manly, particularly at Manly Village Public School where his vote was down to just 28.96 per cent from 45.12 per cent, a 16.18 per cent fall.

At Manly West Public School he was also down from 44.64 per cent to 28.94 per cent.

Ms Steggall polled strongly at the two major Manly booths with 52.61 per cent and 53.15 per cent.

Over the Spit Bridge in wealthy Mosman traditional Liberal voters also turned their backs on the Party in great number with his first preference vote down from 57.99 per cent in 2016 to 40.14 at Mosman High School.

In comparison Ms Steggall polled 46.42 per cent, 48.63 per cent and 46.23 per cent across the same three centres.

Even at Mr Abbott’s home polling booth, Forestville Public School, he lost more than 10 per cent of his first preference vote, dropping from 58.61 per cent to 48.45 per cent.

And at Queenscliff Surf Club, where he has volunteered for many years, his vote dropped 16.81 per cent from 49 per cent to 32.20 per cent.

He managed to limit the damage in his traditional strongholds including Beacon Hill, where he lost 7.33 per cent, Allambie Heights (7.63) and Killarney Heights (9.78) but it wasn’t enough as his percentage loss reached double digits across most voting centres.
