ONE of the two young men who had to be rescued after falling down a cliff face on the northern beaches has told how lucky the pair were not to have been more seriously injured.

Sean Maguire, 21, of Homebush, was with his best mate when they both tumbled close to 3m onto rocks at the base of Dee Why Headland late on Sunday afternoon.

Mr Maguire’s friend, who was visiting him from Brisbane for the weekend, suffered a broken wrist and multiple cuts and bruises. He also badly injured his right hip in the fall and had to be winched out by the NSW Ambulance helicopter.

The men had been on a day out in Dee Why when they decided to scramble along the rocks below Dee Why Cliff Reserve.

They tried to make their way down to a flat rocky outcrop, about 120m south of the Dee Why rock pool, to get a better view of the ocean.

“I managed to get down part of the way to where we wanted to go and my friend was above me,” Mr Maguire said.

“As he was climbing down, a rock he was holding on to gave way and he fell on top of me. I tried to hold him up against the cliff face, but he’s bigger than me and we ended up both falling down on to the rocks and the barnacles.”

Mr Maguire landed on his feet, but crashed on to his knees and hands. His friend snapped his wrist and smashed his hip into the rocks.

“My friend ended up in a small pool of water,” Mr Maguire said.

“It was so lucky that we didn’t hit our heads.”

People on a walking track above the rocks climbed down to help while others went to alert lifeguards at Dee Why Beach.

Mr Maguire suffered a number of cuts and bruises and a possible broken ribs, but was able to walk back to the beach with the help of Ambulance and NSW Fire and Rescue personnel.

The second man told paramedics he had no use of the right side of his body and could not put weight on his right leg. Authorities said it would be easier to remove him from the site using the helicopter.

Two paramedics were lowered from the helicopter and, with paramedics already on the scene, treated the two men.

The more seriously injured man was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Mr Maguire was taken by ambulance to RNS.
