ACCIDENTAL hero Jared Palmer will never forget the first field he has ever kicked in his career.
It sealed his Avalon Bulldogs side their A-grade grand final win over raging favourites Narraweena Hawks at Brookvale Oval on Sunday in the most remarkable of circumstances.
The sides were locked at 18-all with three minutes to play when the ball went to Avalon five-eighth Will Kelly who didn’t have time to put in a kick and passed to hooker Alan Avis.
He offloaded to front-rower Palmer who screamed for the ball before sending it soaring between the posts from 40m out to grab the Bulldogs a stunning 19-18 victory.
“I glanced at the clock quickly the play before and thought I just had to hit it,” Palmer, 20, said.
“I’ve never even kicked a field goal at training, I always practice and always shank them.”
But as soon as the ball left his boot on Sunday, Palmer knew it was going over.
It was only Narraweena’s second loss of the season and when the team’s met a fortnight before the Hawks won convincingly 28-10.
But this time around the dogged Avalon side never let up on their bigger and more experienced rivals.
And Palmer put the won down to the strong mateship and heart in the team.
“The boys love going to training together and love playing for each other,” he said.
“We looked at each other in the sheds at halftime and said ‘this is it, we’ve got to do it’.”
