She is a gun in the pool but now Newport surf life saver Emily Doyle has a plan to prove herself in the surf.

The northern beaches teenager has enlisted the help of some of the top young ironman in the state in a quest to secure a spot on this summer’s Nutri-Grain ironwoman series.

Doyle is part of a training group at the club boasting the likes of brothers Max and Charlie Brooks and Jackson Borg.

Brooks in April thwarted surf legends Shannon’s Eckstein’s bid to go out a winner by claiming the Australian ironman crown on the Gold Coast.

“They are stronger but I just work not to fall behind,’’ Doyle said.

“It’s made me train even harder.”

Doyle, 18, said she was relishing the atmosphere at the club with her main aim this season to qualify into the Nutri-Grain series which kicks off in October with the famous Coolangatta Gold endurance race.

“I competed in the trials last year and raced in four of six iron finals last year and I got a real taste for it,’’ Doyle said, who recently won the under 18 200m super lifesaver at the Australian pool rescue championships involving a mix of events, including a 200m obstacle race and rescue medley.

“My best result was an 11th in North Wollongong in the first round.

“It was so good racing against the girls I have idolised since I was a kid.

Since I’m still quite young I learned to face smarter and more competitively. I learned so much about racing.”

Doyle heads north this week in a bid to qualify for the series via two day trials on the Sunshine Coast.

She must be in the top six at the end of the weekend to make the cut for the series.
