Sea Eagles co-captain Jamie Buhrer has received a rousing endorsement from one of the most astute judges of rugby league talent — Manly’s “godfather” Ken Arthurson.
The man who turned the Sea Eagles into the game’s powerhouse in the 1970s, was again impressed by Buhrer’s performance during last Saturday’s 44-30 loss to the Raiders at Brookvale Oval,
That included a terrific break that set up a try for his good mate Daly Cherry-Evans.
“I’m a great fan of Jamie Buhrer, I’ve got a very high regard for him,” Arthurson said.
“He’s a terrific player and he’s a lovely young man too.”
Arthurson said Buhrer was a bit of a unsung hero in the Manly side who doesn’t receive too many wraps.
“He never stops trying, he never stops tackling and whenever someone makes a break he’s there or thereabouts,” Arthurson said.
“He’s not actually a big bloke for a forward, but by God he does some work.”
Buhrer has played one State of Origin game back in 2012 and Arthurson believes he has the ability to play more.
One of the highlights of Manly’s difficult season has been the way Buhrer has fought his way back from a shocking run with injuries.
Arthurson travelled down from the Gold Coast for Saturday’s game to farewell retiring Manly skipper Jamie Lyon.
Lyon rang Arthurson last week to tell him he was not playing
“I said irrespective of that I will still be coming down because I admire what you have done for the club so much and I want to be a part of it with you,” Arthurson replied.
