HERE are three of the reasons why Sea Eagles champion Jamie Lyon has decided to retire — his children Jed, Ava and Riley.
On the field Jamie Lyon is a rugby league champion who has achieved the highest honours in the game- and away from the spotlight he is a proud dad.
The departing Manly captain revealed that one of the factors that led to his impending retirement from the NRL was the desire to spend more time with Riley, 11, Jed, 9, and five-year-old Ava.
“Definitely on the weekend it is hard travelling away and you wake up after games with a few injuries after games so it is hard to be too active with them,” Lyon told the Manly Daily on the eve of his big farewell from Brookvale Oval this afternoon.
“I’ll get some more time at home with the kids and it will be fun. It’s always great spending time with them.
“And I’m looking forward to getting the body intact after all the niggling injuries that come with the game.”
And Lyon knows his decision to retire at the end of this season, pulling down the curtain on distinguished career which started back in 2000 with Parramatta, is the right one.
“Baz (coach Trent Barrett) asked me to go on and play another year,” he said, “I thought about it for a while but it hit home probably the back end where I had a couple of injuries.
“And with my body it is just too hard to stay on the field — a few years ago you might miss one or two games but now it is a bit hard.”
He is also happy about the prospect of being more grounded and spending less time in the air.
“I don’t like flying, so that is good,¨ he said. he
