Newport teen Stella Campbell earn NSW Breakers cricket call-up

She’s made her debut in the WBBL even before leaving school. Now teenage fast bowler Stella Campbell has her sights set on breaking more new ground.

She’s a rising star for the Sydney Sixers and now Stella Campbell looks set be a big hit for the NSW Breakers after making the cut for the side for the first time.

The Newport teenager could make her debut in Thursday’s game against Queensland Fire at Hurstville Oval as the Women’s National Cricket League resumes following two early season matches in September.

Mondays game against the ACT Meteors at Hurstville Oval on Monday was postponed after bushfires prevented Meteors players travelling to Sydney on Sunday.

“I can’t wait. I am just so excited to be part of the NSW Breakers,’’ said the 17-year-old seam bowler who made her debut for the Sixers in the WBBL this season, playing in 10 games.

“They have such an amazing history.

“It was one of my goals but I didn't know it would happen so soon.

“It’s such a prestigious team with an amazing record so to be in it is pretty special.’’

The Breakers have won 20 titles in the 23-year history of the women’s national cricket league, including last season’s crown.

Fellow northern beaches cricketer Alyssa Healy is among four internationals playing for the Breakers in the matches at Hurstville Oval.

Captain Healy will play alongside vice-captain Rachael Haynes and off-spinning all-rounders Ash Gardner. Erin Burns has been ruled out with a knee injury with eastern suburbs cricketer Maddy Darke called in as a replacement.

The Breakers go into this weeks matche in fifth following a win and a loss at the start of the season when without their internationals.

“It’s always nice to have the international players back playing under the Baggy Blue cap and this month presents an opportunity for our full squad to connect after a long period of international and WBBL cricket,” said Breakers coach Dom Thornley.

“Our girls are excited at the prospect of playing six matches within the next six weeks and build some momentum in this competition.’’

The matches will br crucial also for players pushing their claims to represent Australia at the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.
