Ironwoman Georgia Miller, paddler Kailey Harlen, surf life saving official Louis Tassone honoured

Just add water and northern beaches athletes and volunteers tend to shine. A trio were rewarded for their efforts with major awards on the weekend.

Georgia Miller is hoping for a season to remember in 2019/2020 but she has been honoured for a season she will never forget at the Australian’s Surf Life Saving awards.

The Northern beaches born and bred ironman, now training on the Gold Coast ahead of round two of the professional ironwoman series, was honoured for a spectacular last season at the nationals awards on the weekend.

Miller, who has represented both the Manly and Newport Surf Life Saving clubs, was only the second athlete in history to win the surf trifecta of a Coolangatta Gold, Nutri-Grain iron series and the Australian ironwoman crown in the same season.

Additionally she was a member of the Australian team at the world titles, winning the swim race, ski race, ironwoman, board rescue, mixed Taplin relay and tube rescue.

Also honoured on the night was Louis Tassone from the North Curl Curl SLSC, who was awarded Surf Sport Official of the Year.

Tassone has worked on numerous events throughout the seasons, including being the Manly Open sectional referee beach, the deputy referee at the SLSNSW Pool Rescue championships and area referee for the Australian Open championships and Ocean 6 Series.

In Sydney, Freshwater canoe sprint talent Kailey Harlen was awarded the Junior Paddler of the Year (Olympic) at a gala dinner.

Harlen, 18, is considered on the rising talents of the sport but had part of her season interrupted by an injury after a bike crash which ruled her out of the junior world championships.

At the Australian canoe sprint titles she won every junior event and also made it through to the finals of the open womenh’s 500m event.

She was also a member of the NSW senior K4 crew which won the Helen Brownlee Cup.
