SWEEPING views of the Sydney CBD will be enjoyed from the modern Northern Beaches Hospital when it is completed in 2018.
A sneak peek of the new facility shows cycling paths, outdoor eating and retail facilities on the site.
The flyover video released by The State Government yesterday shows a multistorey carpark with pedestrian overbridge leading to the hospital.
A grand walkway with outdoor seating and glass archways flows on to the main entrance. Inside is an open-plan section including information desk, pharmacist, coffee shop and florist.
The video boasts hi-tech surgical wards, and patient rooms with million-dollar views. Premier Mike Baird, Health Minister Jillian Skinner and local MPs Brad Hazzard and Jonathan O’Dea celebrated reaching the final building height yesterday.
A gum tree was raised to the top of the hospital by crane to mark reaching the hospital’s 40m summit.
“For those that remember this has been for decades a discussion about building a new hospital here on the northern beaches,” Mr Baird said.
“Many promises were made but when we came to government there wasn’t a dollar allocated towards it.”
Mr Baird said the facility would be among the world’s best when complete.
“The project director was saying he has worked across the country, and across the world and he thinks this is the best project he has ever been involved in,” Mr Baird said. “In terms of the local community you can’t get a better testimony than that.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2018 — but a more specific date has not been provided.
The nine-storey hospital is on a 6.5ha site at the intersection of Warringah Rd and Wakehurst Parkway.
It will include 488 beds, 1400 car spaces, a helipad, a 50-space emergency department, 14 operating theatres, advanced intensive care and critical care units and an inpatient mental health facility and will employ 1300 staff. The hospital will be a co-share public-private hospital with HealthScope.
