SHOCKING footage has emerged showing thrillseekers risking their lives by scaling the partially-built Northern Beaches Hospital for the sake of a few photos and a YouTube clip.
Footage and pictures posted to social media shows at least five young men breaking into the fenced-off construction site, before climbing up and moving scaffolding to reach the building’s summit.
Known as “roofers”, this is another example of a recent social media craze that sees people posing on top of cranes and skyscrapers.
Northern Beaches duty officer Inspector Nigel Taylor said it appeared no damage had been done on the site, but the young people were definitely trespassing.
“What they were doing was a dangerous and illegal activity, and we’re investigating it,” Insp Taylor said.
The stunt happened between late October and early November.
The young men also don’t make much of an effort to conceal their identities in the clip, with one also posting on social media: “Was an awesome experience and the view towards Chatswood and the city is amazing.”
A spokesman for CPB Contractors, the design and construction contractor for the project, would not comment on how high the men had climbed, or if the company would implement more stringent security measures to prevent incidents.
The Manly Daily attempted to contact one of the men.
DEADLY CRAZE
Police Association of NSW president Scott Weber said last month, the deadly pursuit of internet notoriety was a disturbing new trend:
“It’s stupid people putting not only their own lives at risk, but everyone else including emergency services workers who will have to go there and respond. It’s all accelerator and no breaks with these kids.”
