Single in Sydney: Sarah gets some dating tips from Sex And The City star Kim Cattrall

WHO better to offer Single in Sydney’s Sarah some dating tips, than iconic Sex and the City star, Kim Cattrall?

Kim Cattrall talks to Single in Sydney's Sarah Swain

JOURNALIST Sarah Swain has been single (but dating) for longer than she cares to remember. That’s because it’s tough out there, as any single will tell you, so to bring hope to others across the city, she’s sharing her no-holds-barred adventures on the Sydney single scene every week.

Dating Tips from Kim Cattrall

IN real life she’s far from the man-eating, sex-mad Samantha from iconic TV show Sex and the City.

But, having married three times, and still smouldering at 60, Kim Cattrall knows a thing or two about men.

So, when she gave me a call to talk about swapping sex for specs for the Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2016 competition, I managed to get the queen of SATC to share some of her dating tips too.

1. Don’t get over excited

“I think you have to be very conscious, very open and aware and present when you’re with someone,” said Cattrall when asked if she had any tips for daters like me, who are over 30.

“Really pick up on what that voice inside is telling you about that person — really listen to that, don’t ‘pooh pooh’ it because you’re so excited to be out on a date.

“And don’t be in any hurry,” she added. “Get to know the person before you give away too much of yourself. I find that we women do that. We’re rushing too much to impress a man or make him what we want him to be and sometimes that’s just an impossible task.”

2. Have fun

Dating can all get a bit much, especially when he doesn't call. Again.

But remember it’s supposed to be fun, said Cattrall, who said that was something she took away from SATC (she also wrote a book called Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm).

“I think there’s really something to be said about letting things unfold naturally,” she said.

She also “absolutely” believes women are under a lot of pressure to get into a relationship.

3. Do SATC time

“I think that’s one of the things I loved so much about SATC — the girlfriends were the family,” said Cattrall.

But being alone is also very important said Cattrall, who even shared her love of colouring books on Instagram recently.

“What I’ve learned over the years is to be better to myself, and more patient with myself and those around me,” she said.

4. Meet men through mates

While Cattrall herself wouldn't confirm if she’s dating or single, after being linked to an artist called Clifford Ross, 60, (“I’m dipping my toe” she said), she revealed some of her friends have found love online.

“I have friends that have had a lot of success — match.com in particular,” she said. “I like to meet people through friends or through a work situation, and I really take my time to get to know someone.”

5. Men DO make passes at girls who wear glasses

Cattrall reckons the old saying ‘men don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses’ ain’t true. So I swapped my contacts for specs this week in her honour.

“Not in my experience, and I’ve been wearing glasses since I was about 10 — not that people were making passes at me when I was ten,” she laughed.

“I’ve always enjoyed wearing glasses because I felt it was something that made me unique.”

Cattrall added Sex and the City costume boss, Patricia Field, worked with her on Samantha’s sexy specs — but she didn’t keep many.

“Samantha’s glasses were for me, Kim, so over the top and I didn’t have the wardrobe to really match. I live in the real world, let’s just say that. But I loved playing with all the different styles.”

6 She doesn’t know if SATC will return

“I have no idea. I don’t know.” she said “I just know that the experience we had was a once in a lifetime experience. I became so much more confident — that was a great benefit of playing Samantha. I only have good memories.”
