A MUSICIAN who recorded covers in his makeshift northern beaches studio and posted them to YouTube has landed a $2 million music deal.
William Singe, 23, has signed the biggest deal ever given to a new Australian artist. It’s with RCA Records — alongside big names Alicia Keys, Miley Cyrus and Justin Timberlake.
Mr Singe, from Forestville, who once worked as a bank teller in Dee Why, signed the contract in New York with manager and friend Julian Petroulas.
Mum Sue, 57, who works for the Australian Veterinary Association, said her son called to tell her the news on Saturday.
“He rang me and told me he didn’t get it ... then he went ‘nah just kidding,” she said. “It’s pretty awesome. He’s worked really hard.”
As reported in the Manly Daily, former St Augustine’s student Mr Singe, whose real name is Liam, had a taste of success on The X-Factor, but left his band The Collective and started recording covers of R’n’B hits at home.
They have garnered 100 million views on YouTube and he has 2.5 million Facebook fans.
He posted on Facebook: “I’m so grateful for a family that has supported my music from the get-go, my mum has been my biggest fan since day one and my old man taught me music and hard work.
“I’ve always felt in my heart that I was picking up where my dad had left off, putting music on the back burner to raise my sister and myself with my beautiful mother, so today I feel like it isn’t just me who has accomplished something but my whole family as they’ve gone through all the ups and downs with me and they’ve known the struggle of this music business long before I was even a thought in their minds.”
Singe kicks off his Australia tour at Capitol, Perth, September 29, Adelaide Uni on September 30, 170 Russell, Melbourne, October 2, Max Watts, Brisbane, October 5 and Metro Theatre, Sydney, October 6.
