An elderly woman living in a northern beaches retirement complex has been taken to hospital after catching coronavirus.

The woman, 84, lives at the Dee Why Gardens Retirement Village in Fisher Rd North.

Health officials confirmed this afternoon that the woman, who lives in a unit at the complex run by property giant Lendlease, was hospitalised.

Health NSW also confirmed that a member of her family also has COVID-19 and that investigations into how they caught the virus were ongoing.

The elderly woman and her relative are two of the six new cases recorded in NSW in the 24 hours to 8pm on Monday.

Dee Why Gardens has 230 one, two and three-beroom independent living units on its 3.6ha property.

The village is popular with retirees and seniors because it is built on level land and allows pet ownership.

In a statement Lendlease said the health and safety of retirement village residents was are paramount.

“During the past month, we’ve introduced a number of measures to help keep our residents safe,” the statement read. “These include social distancing, greatly reducing the number of non-essential employees and contractors visiting our villages, as well as discontinuing group activities, closing all community centres and communal facilities including gyms, libraries, cinemas, and swimming pools.”

The company has also increased the frequency at which the village’s communal area is cleaned.

“We’re also working closely with our external home care providers to make sure they have appropriate plans in place to minimise any risk to our village communities,” the spokesman said.

The Dee Why case comes as latest figures show there have been 153 confirmed coronavirus cases in the Northern Beaches Council area.
