A man is fighting for life after he was pulled from a burning house on the northern beaches.

Firefighters found the man, 55, unconscious in the home on Pavilion St at Queenscliff on Thursday night.

A total of 24 firefighters from Dee Why, Mona Vale, Crows Nest and Neutral Bay stations were called to the blaze at about 10.30pm.

Two firefighters made their way into the burning home and found the unresponsive man in one of the front rooms.

Witnesses said they saw flames coming from the home’s windows.

The firefighters supplied him with oxygen.

Fire and Rescue spokesman Adam Dewberry said the two northern beaches firefighters who found the man had to battle through “thick, dark, and hot smoke”, to reach the unconscious occupant.

“It was great firefighting by these officers to get to this man,” Inspector Dewberry said.

“There was no sign of a working smoke alarm in the house.”

Police are now investigating the cause of the fire.

“About 10.30pm last night emergency services were called to Pavilion St, Queenscliff, following reports of a house fire,” according to a police statement.

“Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command attended, alongside Fire and Rescue NSW crews, who extinguished the blaze.

“Firefighters forced entry into the house and located a 55-year-old man inside. The man was removed from the house and treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.

“Police established a crime scene and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fire. Inquiries are ongoing.”

Insp. Dewberry reminded locals that they can contact their local Fire and Rescue brigade to get assistance with smoke alarms.
