Pub grub has moved on since the days of chicken schnitties and chips with everything.
If you’re out for lunch, here’s how three local pubs dish it up.
The outdoorsy setting of The Newport has reworked modern fast food. Think hot smoked salmon, crab omelet, pizzas and oysters.
Executive chef Sebastien Lutaud said this new style of casual fast food would appeal to foodies as well as families and old-style pub customers.
“We’ve got a bit of everything to get the balance right,” he said.
Central to the outdoor dining areas is the Burger Shack. If you don’t fancy burgers, then salads are a lighter option and there are five types available.
The rotisserie chickens were on trend and had been popular, Mr Lutaud said.
A whole marinated bird will set you back $38.50 but it will feed a family. It comes on a platter with garlic sauce, tabouli, chilli, lettuce cups and tortilla wraps.
Sunday isn’t Sunday without a winter favourite – the traditional roast.
Manly Wharf Hotel head chef Leti Roma and his team have a hearty roast on the menu once a week.
The $25 dish comes with all the trimmings, including vegies, gravy and a glass of wine. The type of meat changes weekly and features chicken maryland or roast pork.
A rotisserie was on order and should arrive by September, Mr Roma said.
The waterfront pub’s menu has weekday specials and there is always fish and chips, pizzas and burgers.
The age of sharing plates and uber trendy American-style food is part of the dining experience at the Mona Vale Hotel.
Burger choices include the MHV classic, a vegetarian option and soft-shelled crab sliders. That taste of Americana also takes in spicy chicken wings, sticky glazed lamb ribs and soft-shell tacos.
Fancy something sweet? Go for a salted caramel sundae. It has butterscotch and peanut brittle.
