The Prime Minister has written to voters in Warringah urging them to vote for the embattled Tony Abbott.
In the letter, dated May 7, Scott Morrison warned of the danger of a protest vote, claiming it could lead to a “Shorten government in Canberra”.
“Since Tony Abbott led us to government back in 2013 we have been getting the job done,” Mr Morrison said in the letter.
“More than a million jobs have been created, as Tony promised. And by restoring our borders we have stopped the deaths at sea, we have got all children out of detention and all children off Nauru.”
In the letter Mr Morrison states that he recognises many voters have “strong opinions” on Mr Abbott.
He adds: “Tony has served his local community from the day he entered parliament and before. He is someone that I know has deep convictions and wears his heart on his sleeve.
“Tony also sets an example by the way he represents his community, including as a volunteer firefighter and surf lifesaver. He is a very hardworking local MP with much still to offer.”
In reference to Mr Abbott’s rival Zali Steggall, he adds: “We know that Independents who have been elected in the past have voted to put Labor in government after a close election. Australia cannot risk a Shorten Labor government.”
He signs off with “your sincerely, Scott Morrison, Prime Minister.”
The letter comes just days after a similar endorsement was sent to voters by former Prime Minister John Howard.
Mr Abbott has said he faces the fight of his political life as he battles Ms Steggall for the seat he has held since 1994.
The involvement of Prime Ministers past and present is testament to how close the vote is predicted to be on May 18.
This morning Sportsbet has both Ms Steggall and Tony Abbott at $1.88 each.
