THE annual culinary challenge is on. A swag of northern beaches restaurants will take on some of Sydney’s best venues at the metro Restaurant and Catering Awards.

Numbers are up this year. The northern beaches has a strong representation with finalists in 13 of the 28 categories, as well as a finalist in the catering section.

Last year, there were 10 nominations spread over 30 categories.

Drill down in to the categories and a definite pattern emerges with multiple finalists in several categories.

Breakfast, cafe dining, Indian, informal contemporary Australian, informal Italian and new restaurants all have more than one finalist per category.

Two categories — breakfast and cafe — take Balgowlah cafe owner Rowan Millar directly to the awards night in September.

Roseberry Street Cafe has built up a reputation over six years and is more than a casual, seven-day enterprise, Mr Millar said.

“We put so much effort into what we do. Good service is just as important,” Mr Millar said.

“Our produce is amazing, too. We change our menu regularly and we also have weekly breakfast specials.”

Mexican eggs, big breakfasts and breakfast bowls tap into current trends, while super acai frappés, green power smoothies and golden turmeric lattes keep the healthy set happy.

Good coffee is essential. Roseberry Street Cafe roasts its own beans for its global house blend and has two styles of single origins daily.

Restaurateur Alessandro Pavoni’s versatility is evident with three contrasting styles of dining up for awards.

Flagship restaurant Ormeggio at The Spit will take on two of Sydney’s big guns, Tetsuya’s and Quay, in the fine-dining category. Chiosco by Ormeggio, his casual waterfront eatery at the Spit, is a finalist in the informal Italian category. Ormeggio Group’s woodfired trattoria, Sotto Sopra in Newport will compete against nine new venues.

Manly’s Milestone Events is a finalist in the wedding category.

The NSW awards night will be held on September 18 at Luna Park. National winners will be announced in Victoria on October 30.
