WHEN Kylie Messiter was diagnosed with a brain tumour, she said it was a relief.

She had been told the headaches and nausea she had suffered for a year were everything from pancreatic cancer to anxiety.

But while the tumour was benign and has been removed, complications mean the Dee Why mum has been forced to give up work at logistics firm Dematic in Belrose at just 42.

Her brain did not stop swelling after the surgery in 2012, and part of her skull had to be removed.

She now suffers constant, migraine-type headaches, which she likens to being stabbed in the head with a knife, because of the surgeries.

But she said she was staying positive – and had chronicled her illness, which saw her undergo three brain surgeries – in a blog.

“Some days I struggle and I cry and some days I realise I’m so blessed,” she said.

“I’ve got some really beautiful people around me and I couldn’t have better parents if I tried.

“The outlook is that I’ll probably end up in hospital twice a year, and they’ll try and get the pain under control.

“They’ve said I’ll never go back to work.”

The single mum of Corey, 22, who works at Dee Why RSL, has been in hospital 13 times over the past four years.

At one point, when she was asked by medics to read a newspaper, she was unable to talk, and was rushed for lifesaving surgery. Her brain had pushed through her skull.

“It means I shouldn't have survived,” she said.

How to help

Insurance has covered some of Kylie’s medical bills, but she has spent $32,000 of her savings and said she had been waiting to hear about help from Centrelink since February

A fundraiser is planned for Friday, November 11
