A former pro boxer has fronted court over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Marc John Bargero was arrested by detectives last month after allegedly assaulting a 15-year-old girl while she was asleep at a friend’s home in Belrose on June 6.

Police said Bargero, 51, met the teenager on the night of the alleged offence and was at the property to visit a woman.

In a statement, police said the teenager woke during the alleged incident and told her friends, who contacted police.

Bargero was arrested the next day and taken to Manly Police Station but was released pending further investigations.

The Wyongah resident was rearrested on the Central Coast on June 24 and charged with having sexual intercourse with a child.

Bargero’s case was heard in Manly Local Court on Thursday and his bail was continued on conditions including surrendering his passport, not approaching the alleged victim or being alone with a person under the age of 18.

He must also reside at his Wyongah home and must not drink or take drugs.

When contacted by the North Shore Times he said: “I’m not too proud of what happened but I’ll defend the charges.”

“I can’t say too much more than that,” he added.

Bargero was one of the country’s most talented fighters in his prime and fought the likes of Anthony Mundine in venues across the country and overseas.

He retired with a record of 42 wins from his 61 bouts.

Nicknamed ‘Working Class Man’, Bargero held multiple titles throughout his career including the Australian Light Heavyweight Title (2003, 2007), the IBO Asia Pacific Light Heavyweight Title (2005) and the Australian Middleweight Title (1997-98, 1999-00).

Originally from Syndey’s inner west, he has long been based on the Central Coast where he has his own gym called Starship Bargero.

The gym’s Star Wars themed website offers offers the space as a gym, events space and function centre.

Bargero is due to reappear in court in August.
