Northern Beaches Council remove controversial Manly Lagoon sign after resident ‘targeted’

Northern Beaches Council has decided to pull down a controversial sign after a resident was ‘targeted’ by those opposing it. The Manly Lagoon sign urged dog walkers to keep the noise down. But those who enjoy the surrounds say it was only installed because of complaints from one man.

Northern Beaches Council will remove a controversial sign after those opposed to it are said to have “targeted” a local resident.

The sign, installed on Tuesday at Manly Lagoon, asks dog walkers and other visitors to the off-leash area to keep the noise down.

It is one of two identical signs in the area which were first installed several months ago.

The freshly installed sign is a replacement for the original which was stolen in recent weeks.

However, the installation of the sign this week has inspired the wrath of dog walkers and other locals who claim the council is acting on the wishes of one wealthy local.

“One complainant, yet thousands asking for more off-leash space and beach access for their dogs. Go figure,” one local said on Facebook.

“Must be one important member of the public,” added another.

Just before 5pm on Wednesday the council issued a statement from the CEO Ray Brownlee, in which he said a member of the public had been targeted.

“Late this afternoon council became aware that community opposition to the newly erected sign was being targeted at a local resident.

“As a duty of care to this resident council was left with no other choice but to remove the sign that was causing the concern.

“We will continue to work with our community to find a balance that manages the expectations of all our residents.”

A spokeswoman said no threats as such were made but a resident had been singled out.

Councillor David Walton, speaking earlier in the day before the decision was made to remove the sign, described it as “obtrusive” adding that he would seek advice from council bosses on the decision behind it.

“My wife and I walk our dogs down there and I’m very mindful about the noise and try to be respectful to the residents and all users of the park. Most responsible dog owners do exactly the same.”

Cr Pat Daley said he was not aware of problems in the area or recent complaints.

“I fully support that area being an off-leash dog area and I’m sure dog walkers, the public and residents can live in harmony.”

When asked if the signs were put up on the back of one resident’s complaint, council CEO Ray Brownlee said: “Council has a duty of care to all our residents and we are trying to find a balance for everyone.”

He added: “This is a very popular reserve generating high activity, especially on weekends. The signs, one of which has been in place for the last seven months, is simply to politely remind people to be mindful of those living nearby while they are enjoying this area.”
