A CRACKDOWN on boat trailers parked in the street is about to begin.

From Friday trailers parked on roads or public land between North Narrabeen and Palm Beach, which have not been moved for at least 28 days, can be impounded.

The former Pittwater council area, now covered by Northern Beaches Council, is part of a pilot program trialling new NSW legislation which will allow them to tackle the problem.

The new rules mean the trailers must be moved at least every 28 days.

Northern Beaches Council general manager Mark Ferguson said: “With its plethora of waterways, the northern beaches is renowned for its unattended boat trailers and up until now council has not been able to do much about them.

“This new legislation allows council to impound trailers that have been parked in the same location for prolonged periods, a deterrent we hope will encourage trailer-owners to make more considered choices.

The council must give 15 days notice before impounding the trailers. The fee to release vehicles from the pound starts at $250.
