A northern beaches school has cancelled its annual fireworks spectacular out of solidarity with those people who have lost homes and loved ones in the current NSW bushfire emergency.
Mimosa Public School at Frenchs Forest had scheduled the 15-minute fireworks display for this Saturday night, as part of its popular annual fundraising carnival.
After discussions this week with the Rural Fire Service (RFS) about the current fire conditions, organisers decided to cancel the show.
But the carnival, which will run from 2pm to 9pm at Lionel Watts Oval in Blackbutt Ave, is still on.
Organising committee co-ordinator Janelle Jordan said 30 per cent of the money raised in carnival ticket sales will be donated to the RFS.
The school is also collecting gold coin donations that will go to Drought Angels, a charity helping Australian farmers battle the big dry.
Ms Jordan urged people who were looking forward to the fireworks, to still come along to the carnival to help raise money for the school, as well as the volunteer firefighters and drought-affected farmers.
“This morning we have made the decision to continue with our ever-popular carnival tomorrow at Lionel Watts without the fireworks display,” she said.
“This is due to both the current fire conditions and out of solidarity with those who have lost their homes and loved ones.
“The decision was made by the school in conjunction with the fireworks event committee, and we have worked closely with the RFS this week to monitor conditions.”
Ms Jordan said the committee will donate 30 per cent of the entry fees — the cost of the fireworks display — to the RFS

There will be a mini Ferris Wheel, Flying Fish and slide for the little kids.
“Please come along and enjoy a great afternoon and evening and support the appeal as well as Mimosa Public School,” Ms Jordan said.
“Also remember to visit kiddies corner and make a gold coin donation to Drought Angels.
“We have 48 years of history in this community and really want to make tomorrow a great event. See you there”
