One of the most well-used sports reserves on the northern beaches is set for a massive makeover.
To help boost the capacity of playing fields for winter and summer grassroots sports Northern Beaches Council wants Miller Reserve at Manly Vale to go synthetic.
The proposed upgrade includes artificial turf for soccer, cricket, touch football and ultimate frisbee competitions. And the plan makes room for two extra pitches and four new cricket practice nets.
In documents on its website the council said the use of a synthetic surface at Miller Reserve, the home ground for the popular Manly-Allambie United football club, was designed to extend the use of the playing fields, particularly in wet weather. The council has already installed synthetic playing fields at Cromer Park and Lionel Watts Reserve at Frenchs Forest.
It said converting sports fields to synthetic grass provided an additional 19 hours of capacity per field a week. The surface can be used in wet weather, does not degrade over a winter season and needs less maintenance.
