A MAN who was allegedly close to three times over the limit and tried to run over a police officer on Remembrance Day has been granted bail in a Sydney court.
A MAN who was allegedly close to three times over the limit and tried to run over a police officer on Remembrance Day has been granted bail in Manly Local Court.
Michael Dooley, 25, of Ashfield, was charged with using his mother’s Subaru Outback as an offensive weapon after allegedly swerving to hit the constable at North Sydney on Sunday.
The police officer, along with a number of other officers, were on duty at a Remembrance Day ceremony at St Leonard’s Park about 4.30pm when they heard a car on nearby Ridge St revving loudly and causing a disturbance.
A constable approached the car and began speaking with Mr Dooley.
But Mr Dooley then allegedly drove off, resulting in the officer’s arm striking the car’s door frame.
Mr Dooley then turned the car around on Ridge St and allegedly swerved at the constable, who had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.
A short time later police found the car, which belongs to Mr Dooley’s mother, crashed into a concrete barrier on nearby Albert St.
Police arrested Mr Dooley and a subsequent breath analysis allegedly returned a reading of 0.139.
He was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, negligent driving, drive with middle range PCA, and drive manner dangerous.
Mr Dooley’s licence was suspended.
In Manly Court police prosecutor John Sharpin opposed Mr Dooley’s bail application.
Sgt Sharpin said there were concerns for public safety as a result of Mr Dooley’s “unexplained behaviour”.
“He has driven a car while intoxicated straight towards a police officer,” he said.
Magistrate Christopher Longley released Mr Dooley on strict conditional bail. He must reside with his mother in Glebe, report to Glebe police station three times a week and refrain from using alcohol or drugs.
The matter was adjourned for mention to Manly Local Court on November 22.
