A northern beaches woman has been scammed out of $16,000 by a ‘love rat’ who pretended to have fallen for the victim.
After the woman, 59, connected with the man online, police said the man appeared to have concocted a story to persuade the woman to transfer money.
“A few months after connecting online, the love rat has informed the woman that he was involved in a motor vehicle accident and money had been stolen from him,” Northern beaches police said.
“The 59-year-old felt sorry for her love interest and subsequently sent money to him over several months.”
The woman was expecting to meet the man in person for the first at the end of July but he never turned up.
Unfortunately, it now appears that the unsuspecting woman has been the victim of a romance scam.
