Liberal councillors Rory Amon and David Walton will challenge Mayor Michael Regan as he bids for another 12 months in the top job at Northern Beaches Council, the Manly Daily understands.
Councillors will vote on who will stand as mayor for the next year at the council meeting on September 24.
Cr Regan was the first mayor of Northern Beaches after amalgamation and he has held the post ever since.
Prior to that he was the mayor of the then Warringah council.
“I am proud of what I, and my fellow councillors have achieved but there is still much that the community expects us to do,” he said.
“I am committed and feel it’s my duty to continue to stand up for what our community cares about and to keep pushing towards the future we all want.”
Cr Amon is the youngest councillor but also perhaps the most outspoken. He has clashed with the Mayor on a number of issues, including notably the bin service rollout and rates rises.
A rising star of the local Liberals, his name has also been mentioned in conversations about the next party candidate for Warringah.
David Walton has a background in the police force and was notably Commander of the Northern Beaches Local Area Command.
Both declined to comment on challenging but the Daily has had it confirmed by several sources.
Both may decide to formally challenge but it is expected the pair will lobby Liberal colleagues before it is decided who has the best chance of success.
