FAMILY  and friends of the Newport girl who died after a pool accident in Bali gathered to scatter her ashes at the weekend.

A memorial paddle-out was held at Newport Beach for three-year-old Kawa Sweeney, whose life support was switched off following a frantic fundraiser to get her back to Australia after the accident.

Flowers, candles and shells were laid on the beach, before locals on surfboards formed a circle offshore.

Kawa was cremated in Perth – where her mum is originally from – last week.

Dozens of people turned out to remember her, with the family asking for white, Hawaiian or floral shirts to be worn.

Parents Des Sweeney, an artist, and Dee Tang, who runs Hawaiian-themed homewares brand Kawaiian Lion, were forced to make the devastating decision after doctors at Perth’s Royal Princess Margaret Hospital said she wouldn’t recover.

The accident happened on the family’s last day at Uluwatu Villas, with Kawa found unconscious in a pool.

Family friend Pearl Tan said the couple were already planning to move to Perth soon after returning and were now preparing to move to WA with their other daughter, one-year-old Rafa.

A total of $89,000 was raised by a GoFundMe campaign after the accident, with the help of the family’s Instagram page.

The flight cost $45,500 and the family also had to pay medical bills in Bali, as they weren’t covered by travel insurance.

Ms Tan said Kawa’s parents would be considering which charity to donate the rest of the money to.
