Late night snackers are lamenting the passing of a northern beaches institution.
The Manly Daily can confirm that Hamlet’s Pies & Coffee, which had fed generations of revellers and locals on The Corso at Manly for more than 40 years, has closed its doors — for good.
Operators of the bakery and cafe — a family from the northern beaches — originally closed its doors temporarily in March, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
On its Facebook page Hamlet’s tolds customers that: “We are having a well earned break while everything gets back to normal”.
But an estate agent who manages the property on behalf of its owner, said on Friday that the people renting the shop have decided to close Hamlet’s down.
The shop has been gutted and the agent, Andrew Reynhout, the director of Rightside in Manly, said the property is now up for lease.
“The family that owns the business has decided to close,” Mr Reynhout said.
“They are disappointed of course.”
Hamet’s, which opened from 7am to 4am on weekends, relied on much of its turnover from late night revellers who had been out for a night in the pubs along The Corso.
The bakery became so poplar it even had its own Facebook fan page – ‘Hamlet’s Pies Fan Club’.
It had a 4.5 star rating, out of five, on internationmal travel site, TripAdvisor.
People were drawn to its extensive menu which included treats such a combined chicken, asparagus and brie pie; a curry beef and yoghurt pie and; a garlic prawn pie. It also offered basics like bacon and egg rolls, chips and smoothies.
On its Facebook page, loyal customers have been expressing their heartache at news of Hamlet’s closure.
“It says on google that you are permanently closed!!!! Please don’t say it’s true,” wrote one former patron.
The Manly Daily has asked the owners to comment.
