Comedy and “hot dirty dancing” is being promised at Glen Street Theatre this year in a bid to attract a new a type of audience who like a glass of wine and a fun night out.
New director Belinda Gibson said she wanted to build on the loyal older audience they already had, who like traditional theatre and music.
But she also plans to diversify and attract a younger audience who would not typically think of themselves as theatre goers.
This year the theatre will host Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow and 50 Shades! The Musical Parody, the latter aimed at girlfriends wanting to watch “gorgeous talented men and women dancing around”.

“People sometimes think theatre is not for them.
“But it is about entertainment, coming together with your friends and having fun.”
Getting a couple of dates for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow is also a first for the theatre, according to Ms Gibson.
“It’s a coup,” she said.
“There’s really high demand for the Melbourne comedy roadshow.
“I think comedy is a really exciting area for us to explore.”
