A MAN convicted of a sickening road rage attack on Sydney’s northern beaches has been sentenced to a minimum 15 months in jail.
However, Chances Moana, 20, will remain on bail until at least October 10 while he undergoes assessment for house arrest.
On June 2, the Manly Daily first broke the news of the Central Coast labourer’s 15-punch flurry on Andrew Nerlich, 60, in Frenchs Forest.
Mr Nerlich, part-time martial arts instructor at a Manly gym, was attacked as he sat behind the wheel of his car in two separate incidents on Frenchs Forest Rd in May.
On Wednesday, in Manly Court, magistrate Chris Longley referred to Moana’s actions as “the most serious form of road rage matter”.
He then handed down an 18-month jail sentence, with a minimum non-parole period of 15 months.
A 12-month suspended sentence, with minimum of nine months parole, was given for an assault immediately before the flurry.
His Lawyer Brad Kernick told waiting reporters that it was a “just result” but declined to go into further details.
Moana did not answer questions as he walked from the court, except when asked if he was afraid to go to jail, to which he said “no”.
Just days after the attack on Mr Nerlich, Moana suffered massive injuries, including a punctured lung and ruptured spleen, after falling from his motorcycle.
His lawyer argued that this could make him suitable for home detention.
