A MAN who punched a 63-year-old driver 15 times during a road rage attack at Frenchs Forest has been found guilty of assault.

Chances Moana, 20, of Berkeley Vale, was declared guilty in Manly Local Court on Wednesday even though he failed to turn up for a scheduled court appearance.

After being advised that Moana was not in court and had not contacted court officials to offer an excuse for his absence, Magistrate Christopher Longley found two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm proved “beyond reasonable doubt”.

Mr Longley then issued a warrant for Moana’s arrest so he can be brought before the court for sentencing.

On Thursday police said they had now been advised that Moana has been in Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital for the past two weeks to get treatment on a leg.

Police were expected to immediately ask for the arrest warrant to be withdrawn and for the court to set a new date for Moana to be sentenced.

Moana, a labourer, was charged after shocking footage of the attack on the afternoon of May 11 emerged on social media.

The story was broken exclusively by The Manly Daily.

The dashcam video clip, shown to the court and admitted as evidence, shows Moana unleashing multiple blows on the male driver sitting in a Hyundai i30 hatchback stopped at traffic lights at the intersection of Forest Way and Adams St.

It shows Moana, after getting out of his Mazda ute, opening the door of the Hyundai stopped behind him and throwing a punch at the driver.

Moana told police he was “very angry”.

Just before the attack the two cars were involved in a minor collision when Moana’s ute was attempting to merge.

According to the police Fact Sheet tendered to the court, the victim, from Pennant Hills, “blacked out” from the initial blow. His left foot then slipped off the brake pedal and the car rolled forward into the ute.

The footage shows the vehicle slowly pushing Moana’s stationary ute closer to the middle of the intersection.

Dressed in high-vis work clothes, Moana is then seen opening the victim’s door again before throwing multiple punches.

The Fact Sheet said he struck the victim approximately 15 times “using his left and right hands in a rapid and continuous punching motion”. The victim attempted to protect his head with both his arms.

Moana “made full admissions to the offence of assault” during an interview with officers when he turned himself in at Wyong Police Station on May 12, the Fact Sheet said.

Police also said in the Fact Sheet that when Moana was shown the dashcam footage, he identified himself as the offender.

The vision, captured on a truck driver’s dashcam, then shows the younger driver walking back to his ute and driving off.

The footage ends with another truck driver pulling up alongside the victim before walking towards him to check on his welfare.

Police said the victim was left dazed. He suffered multiple lacerations to the left side of his face, left ear and nose. He had to have a stich inserted in a cut to his upper lip.

Officers found blood spattered and smeared on the inside and outside of the Hyundai. The victim was treated by paramedics and taken to Hornsby Hospital.

Moana was also found guilty of failing to exchange particulars with the other driver. He was fined $500 for that offence.
