Work will start today on the $140 million upgrade of Mona Vale Rd.

Residents and motorists are being warned to expect disruption as the stretch is upgraded from two lanes to four between Terrey Hills and Mona Vale.

The road suffers from heavy congestion due to the steep gradient and limited safe vehicle overtaking spaces.

As well as the doubling in lanes the project will widen the shoulders of the road.

Workers will also construct a number of special fauna crossings allowing native animals to safely cross the road.

Work will start today with the removing of trees, shrubs and other vegetation on both sides of Mona Vale Rd between Daydream St, Mona Vale, and Lane Cove Rd, Ingleside.

Workers will then install traffic controls such as barriers, signs and line markings.

The preparation work is expected to take 16 weeks. The second stage of work will then start later in the year and is scheduled for competition by 2022.

They will be on site from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and between 8am and 1pm on Saturday.

Work will also be carried out at night between 8pm and 5am from Monday to Friday.

There will be up to four night shifts a week, but only two consecutive nights in the same area. Affected residents will be notified in advance.

RMS has warned the work will cause noise disruption with the use of chainsaws, excavators, mulchers and chippers.

Heavy trucks and cranes will also be used.

“We will make every effort to minimise the impact by notifying residents before work starts near their property, using noise shields to dampen noise where possible and ensuring equipment and vehicles are turned off when not in use,” An RMS spokesman said.

“During night work, we will focus lights only on the working area. However, there may be some light spillover into some nearby residences.

“No mulching will take place during night work.”

The work will be scheduled in stages at different locations so residents will not be affected for more than two consecutive nights per week.

Disruption is also anticipated for motorists with one lane closed and contraflow in place during night work.
