A man who led police on a wild car chase that reached speeds of up to 120km/h through three northern beaches’ suburbs appeared in Manly Local Court on Monday.
Jason Pfeiler, 39, a disqualified driver since 2007, also blasted through two sets of red lights at high speed in his unregistered Holden Commodore during the pursuit in June.
Pfeiler, unemployed of Milsons Point, pleaded guilty to once count each of police pursuit (drive dangerously); drive while disqualified, special range drink driving and resisting arrest.
Four other charges, including use unregistered vehicle, negligent driving and possess house breaking implements, were withdrawn in court after representations to police.
Pfeiler had originally pleaded not guilty to all eight charges. He has been in custody since his arrest.
In a facts sheet tendered to court, police described Pfeiler as a “habitual offender”.
“He continues to commit traffic related offences despite being a disqualified driver,” it said.
“In the latest incident (Pfeiler) has shown a complete disregard for public safety and posed a serious danger to the community with his driving behaviour on a public road.”
At about 7.50pm on June 19 police in an unmarked car saw Pfeiler, who was driving the Commodore station wagon north on Condamine St at Manly Vale, grab his seatbelt and try and fasten it over his shoulder. The car also had a cardboard front number plate reading “Traffic”.
Police followed him into Kentwell Rd, Allambie, before activating their lights and siren in an effort to pull Pfeiler over.
The facts sheet said Pfeiler then increased speed before turning left into Cornwell Rd, which then flows into Sloane Cres at Allambie.
Pfeiler then turned right on to Condamine St and headed south.
“Police pursued the vehicle at a speed of 120km/h in a 60km/h zone,” the facts sheet said.
The Commodore went through red traffic lights at the intersection of Condamine St and Campbell Pde at Manly Vale.
Pfeiler’s car suddenly swerved at high speed across three lanes, causing it to lose traction and narrowly miss two cars stopped at the lights at Kenneth Rd.
The Commodore then when through another red light before fishtailing, forcing two of its tyres off their rims.
Pfeiler’s car, by then swaying from side to side, turned left into Balgowlah Rd, Balgowlah, narrowly missing parked cars. He then turned left into Roseberry St, then right on to Kenneth Rd before turning right into Quirk Rd, a dead end.
He jumped from the car and ran before being eventually wrestled to the ground and arrested by two officers in Manly West Park.
