Dining review: vegetarian cafe Greenhouse Gypsy in Mona Vale on Sydney’s northern beaches

Greenhouse Gypsy gives carnivores something to chew on with menu of vegetarian food and trendy drinks.

It’s latte time. Not a warm milky coffee served in a glass. Puh-lease.

No, this is 2016 and lattes have been given the full-on hipster treatment.

Where Melbourne leads, everyone follows, and although blue algae lattes haven’t made it to Mona Vale, vegetarian cafe Greenhouse Gypsy does have two trendy lattes on the menu.

Bursting with antioxidants, turmeric is the rising star according to Google food trend analysis. Put the golden powdered rhizome in glass and whiz it up with dates and coconut oil so it’s palatable and bingo.

Turmeric latte has become so popular with customers that cafe owner Nelson Nathanael’s drink is now being sold next door at wholefood store Scoop.

Greenhouse Gypsy also has a matcha latte made with whole ground green tea leaves. It too sings and dances with antioxidants. Ours is frothy, creamy and green. It’s made with soy milk — Greenhouse also has house-made almond and cashew nut milk — and sweetened with honey.

Cold pressed juice fans will find consolation in the selection of cold pressed drinks and smoothies. Immune packs a pretty pink blend of beetroot, carrot, celery, apple and ginger; while apple crumble could almost be a dessert in a glass, as it is made with poached apples, oats, dates, chia, cinnamon and almond-cashew milk.

Greenhouse Gypsy will give carnivores and vegetable dodgers something to think about — although I’m not sure that smoky coconut “bacon” will ever be a piggy substitute in a breakfast roll.

Go for breakfast and there are gluten-free pancakes with house made “nut-ella”, banana and raw buckwheat granola and smashed avo with pomegranate, mint, tomato and feta on toast.

The lunch menu definitely lifts vegetarian food to the next level. It’s fun, full of flavour and interesting.

The roasted vegetable tart comes on another Google food trend — cauliflower.

The cauliflower base is topped with beetroot hummus, roasted veg and served with plenty of greens. It’s delicious.

Even the vegetarian burger with its marinated field mushrooms, haloumi and tomato relish keeps the teen happy. It’s a sneaky one-stop vegetable hit.
