An elderly man has died in hospital after being struck by a car as it allegedly left a driveway on Sydney’s northern beaches.
Witnesses told police the 85-year-old was walking on a footpath near the Dee Why town centre at about 5.45pm on Tuesday when he was hit by the vehicle.
He suffered massive head injuries after the impact knocked him into the roadway, adjacent to a driveway to a block of units on Dee Why Pde.
It is understood the man may have been pulling a small, two-wheeled shopping trolley, which contained a walking stick, at the time.
Emergency services stabilised the unconscious man and drove him to a carpark at James Meehan Reserve, behind the Dee Why Surf Life Saving Club, where a NSW Ambulance emergency helicopter picked him up.
He was placed in an induced coma and taken by ambulance to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.
On Thursday, police said they had been told the previous day the man had died in hospital.
The driver of the car - a 75-year-old man - was not injured in the crash and was taken to hospital on Tuesday evening for mandatory testing.
