He’s not allowed to swim at the local pool or even go to his local beach any more but Australia’s top ironman surf life saver Kendrick Louis has devised a few clever backyard hacks to staying fit during coronavirus isolation.

Regarded as one of the fittest athletes in Australia, the Nutri-Grain ironman series champion from Manly is using the time out from competition to focus on his business Louis Media, a digital media company which creates websites and works in social media.

And helping him are “super-sized coffee breaks” involving time away from the computer, a beverage and snack along with a quick backyard work out he has devised himself to loosen up.

“I like to get up early to see the sunrise and do exercise. It’s my favourite time of the day,” said Louis, who works with numerous fitness companies to help promote them on social media and is working to grow his business while he has time during his enforced break from his sport

“I find seeing the sunrise while exercising or even just going for a light walk kind of gives me that energy to get my day going.

“I find if I don’t do that I am I starting the day quite sluggish.”

Now working from home like most other Australians, Louis said he is finding it increasingly important to take a mid morning and afternoon fitness break.

“I’ll get a 20 minute workout and then get back into it and I actually find that it energises me more,” he said.

“I find if you’re just kind of sitting around trying to get stuff done you are becoming a little stale.

“You need to get out and reset your body which resets your mind.”

The Manly Ironman has shared his tips to stay both mentally and physically fit during this isolation period with a video he filmed in his backyard.

Louis is unsure whether the coronavirus crisis will be over in time for the first major race of the 2020/2021 Surf Life Saving season, the Coolangatta Gold in early October.

But he remains hopeful he will be able to mount a defence of his Nutri-Grain ironman crown sometime over summer. Details of the series are yet to be released.
