A PIECE of metal, believed to be a nail, has been found in an apple at a northern beaches school after a girl bit into it.
The girl was not harmed after the student bit into the apple at Belrose Public School.
Police confirmed that the apple was purchased from the Woolworths supermarket at Glenrose Shopping Centre in Belrose
Northern Beaches detectives were interviewing staff at the store and were expected to visit the school.
A spokesman for the NSW Department of Education was aware of the incident and urged parents to be vigilant when preparing or providing fruit for their children.
“This includes cutting fruit before consumption, throw affected punnets out or return to the place of purchase after several incidents of sewing needles were found in strawberries,” he told the Manly Daily.
Meanwhile, sewing needles have been removed from the shelves at Woolworths nationwide.
Strawberries containing sewing needles, pins and safety pins have been found in all Australian states in the past week.
Earlier this week authorities warned consumers on the northern beaches to check their fruit purchases after a piece of metal was found in a strawberry bought at a Mona Vale supermarket.
A mother told Northern Beaches Police she discovered the 1cm long shard as she cut up the strawberry for her ill son last Friday.
The Woolworths Group and NSW Department of Education have been contacted for comment.
A representative of the Woolworths Group confirmed they were currently investigating the matter.
More to come.
