AUTHORITIES are warning consumers on the northern beaches to check their fruit purchases after a piece of metal was found in a strawberry bought at a Mona Vale supermarket.
The discovery of the metal has been referred to the NSW Police Robbery & Serious Crime Squad.
A mother told Northern Beaches Police she discovered the 1cm long shard as she cut up the strawberry for her ill son last Friday.
The woman bought two punnets of Donnybrook brand strawberries from the supermarket via its online home delivery service.
“The metal has been taken for forensic examination,” a Northern Beaches Police spokeswoman said.
Strawberries containing sewing needles, pins and safety pins have been found in all Australian states. This is the third metal incident in Sydney.
Police are also investigating the discovery of needles in a Pink Lady apple and banana yesterday as the strawberry contamination scare spread across six states.
The NSW Food Authority is advising consumers to check their fridges and freezers for stored strawberries. Consumers should cut strawberries into small pieces before eating them.
Police have warned about copycat incidents.
