Beacon Hill singer performs her dream role in Wicked

It’s been a long time coming but when she was a girl Beacon Hill’s Nikole Music thought she would never don the green.

Beacon Hill singer Nikole Music says when she first saw the musical Wicked she never thought she would ever have the opportunity to play the lead role of Queen Elphaba.

“I was quite young and felt it would no longer be being produced,” she said. “It’s been so successful it has kept going.”

Almost 15 years later and the 27-year-old Bachelor of Criminology student is about to step into that precise, demanding, role for the Willoughby Theatre Company.

Wicked opens Saturday and flies onto the Concourse stage, in Chatswood. It is the prequel to The Wizard Of Oz, ending where the famous film starring Judie Garland begins in Oz.

“She never leaves the stage,” Music said of her character. “It is a huge script with 11 songs. And the songs are quite powerful.

“It’s the biggest role I have ever done and a huge challenge.”

This is saying something as Music has been a part of the musical theatre world for many years, with Willoughby, Stage Artz, and as a student at Stella Maris.

“To be doing musicals as a hobby ... it is amazing,” she said. “It’s something I really love.

“Being a part of the musical theatre world is a great escape from my everyday. And I never thought I’d get the opportunity to play Elphaba.”

Character also undergoes huge emotional transformation

She said even though Willoughby was considered an amateur company, its production values were of a very high standard.

She said that along with the vocal demands, her character also undergoes a vast emotional journey.
