The battle for Warringah has been ramped up with the Advance Australia group paying for a truck to drive around the electorate with anti-Zali Steggall messages emblazoned across it.

The truck, which began making its way around Warringah’s streets last Thursday, has the message “Zali has a secret” on the rear.

On the sides are pictures of the Independent candidate next to Labor leader Bill Shorten.

She is pictured in a red dress with the Labor badge next to her with a speech bubble coming for her mouth. “Over the last 20 years, I have never voted Liberal,” it reads.

Conservative lobby group Advance Australia, which is backing Tony Abbott, said the truck was intended to “call out” Ms Steggall’s tactics.

“She said she has never voted Liberal at a Federal Election so we are letting people know,” the group’s national director Gerard Benedet said.

“It has been going round since last week and will be continuing until the election.”

He added that if she hasn’t voted for Mr Abbott in the 25 years he has been MP for Warringah she must have voted Labor.

Ms Steggall said the truck was being used to peddle lies and said she has not voted Labor.

“I don’t actually own a dress like that (red) so there has been some photoshopping,” she said.

“The reality is that since I turned 18 he has been the only federal member the Liberal Party has put up.

“I have issues with him as a candidate. I don’t like his tactics and I don’t like his values so I have never voted for him.”

She said she has voted Liberal at state level and would vote for current Liberal Manly MP James Griffin on Saturday.

She added: “The irony is it is probably misleading Labor voters who may now vote for me.”

Mr Benedet denied the message was misleading, adding that Ms Steggall “can’t have her cake and eat it”.

“She claims to be a Liberal Independent but has never voted Liberal,” he added.

“We will continue to call her out. We’ve already had people saying they didn’t know she had never voted Liberal.”

Ms Steggall said the truck showed that there must be reform to the Electoral Act.

“At this point you don’t require any basis of fact behind political advertising. It needs to change.”
