Wollondilly Shire Council are asking visitors to Tahmoor’s unofficial tourist hotspot, Mermaids Pool, to take a hike.
Council rangers have increased the number of parking patrols monitoring Rockford Rd, Tahmoor, addressing the ongoing issue of motorists parking unsafely.
Wollondilly Shire Council general manager Luke Johnson said he is sure the community will recognise the important safety reasons for this approach.
“There is no public parking or on-road parking on Rockford Road near the Mermaids Pool,” he said.
“Parking is prohibited along Rockford Road in this vicinity, as signposted, and numerous fines have been issued to people who are parking illegally.”
Wollondilly mayor Judy Hannan told the Macarthur Chronicle last week that Mermaids Pool was an unsafe swimming location and encouraged people to make use of the region’s other waterholes.
“By all means go for a bushwalk but it is dangerous to swim at Mermaids Pool; we have Thirlmere Lakes and Pot Holes reserve where it is much safer to swim,” she said.
The waterhole has been the scene of a number of incidents, with a 22-year-old man winched out by a helicopter on January 20.
A 19-year-old Irish tourist was also rescued by helicopter after swinging on a rope and hitting a rock face on December 30 last year.
Motorists may be issued a $257 Penalty Infringement Notice each time a driver fails to observe the “No Stopping” signs near the watering hole.
