A man is “extremely lucky” to be alive after falling 4500m when a skydive went horribly wrong and his parachutes malfunctioned during a dive south of Sydney.
The 32-year-old lost consciousness when he landed in a paddock at Wilton after the freak accident on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency services rushed to Picton Rd just before 1.45pm to reports the man had crashed into the ground after the parachuting incident.
Paramedics arrived to the scene and treated the man for spinal, pelvic and lower leg injuries.
CareFlight’s Rapid Response Helicopter landed a short time later, conducting an ultrasound to assess internal injuries and administer pain relief.
NSW Ambulance transported the 32-year-old to Liverpool Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A witness who saw the man plummet towards the ground said the speed he was falling at was “unbelievable”.
“I’ve driven years on that highway driving past there thinking one day something bad is going to happen in front of me,” David Daley told the Macarthur Chronicle.
“Although you never wish it to happen.”
Mr Daley said the parachutes deployed but were “all tangled up”.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Sylvia Malecki said the man had been “extremely lucky” not to suffer more serious injuries and should buy himself a lotto ticket.
“Considering the scare the man just had, he was in reasonably good spirits,” she said.
“We urge thrill seekers to take every safety precaution possible when participating in extreme outdoor activities.”
