RUBBISH including plastic bottles, containers and litter found dumped in the receding water levels in Harrington Park Lake was showing the waterway’s “less beautiful side’’.

A resident posted the photo of the ugly litter on the Harrington Grove Estate/Harrington Park Community Noticeboard Facebook page after the falling water levels exposed the unsightly problem.

He said he had emailed Camden Council to ask when and “if it will ever be cleaned’’.

“The more emails they receive hopefully the quicker something will be done,’’ he said on Facebook.

Other residents have posted similar photos of the litter on other Facebook pages in the Macarthur region.

A Camden Council spokeswoman said the heavy rain experienced early in the week washed litter caught in drains and in the surrounding area into Harrington Park Lake.

“Any litter is cleared from the lake on a fortnightly basis and is being done today (Friday),’’ she said.

“While council actively manages waste and responds to illegal dumping, residents and visitors are encouraged to dispose of waste appropriately to reduce the harmful effect it has on the environment.

“Council has installed signs and garbage bins at the site to prompt people to dispose of their waste responsibly.’’

Concerns about litter dumped in the beautiful lake in the popular housing estate is an ongoing problem.

In June last year, the Macarthur Chronicle reported Harrington Park resident Cliff Reece was fed up with “lazy” litterbugs at the lake site and he was consistently placing fast food rubbish in a nearby bin on his daily morning walk.

Mr Reece said a lot of the rubbish dumped in the park ended up in the lake.

“You find rubbish anywhere throughout the park,” he said.

“There are plenty of bins around, but so many people just don’t bother.”

Residents are also encouraged to report littering to the Environmental Protection Authority on 131 555.
