ONE of Australia’s oldest garden clubs will celebrate its 90th birthday at its annual autumn show next Saturday.
Formed in 1927, Ingleburn Horticultural Society and Garden Club will host the show at the Greg Percival Centre in Ingleburn from noon.
Held in conjunction with the Macarthur Rose Society, the show brings together some of the Macarthur region’s finest award-winning gardeners to exhibit their work.
Club president Milton Wearing said the Ingleburn garden club was among Australia’s oldest.
Award-winning exhibitors from the Royal Easter Show will be among the crowd of displays on the day.
“At the end of the show, people can buy flowers or plants which are on sale at a cheap price,” he said.
Mr Wearing said the nature of gardening had changed over the years with people living on smaller properties. “In the old days everyone had a garden with big plots of land but now it’s different with smaller lots,” he said.
The show will also honour a stalwart of the garden club in 93-year-old Dr Peter Benson.
Dr Benson attended the first show held by the club in 1927 with his parents when he was three years old.
Club president Milton Wearing said Dr Benson’s Macquarie Fields home was well known for its bright garden.
“Peter has been a valued member for many years and has helped many people with their own gardens,” Mr Wearing said. “As part of our celebrations for our 90th birthday we’ll be honouring Peter who has been our stalwart member for all these years.”
“We have some wonderful members here who are willing to pass on their knowledge about gardening to anyone who wants to learn.
“Even if you don’t have a large yard, you can still start a small garden on a balcony and our members can give advice on that.”
Mr Wearing said the club was looking to bring in some younger members over the next few years.
He encouraged people to come down and check out their work.
“There’s a lot of experience here with specialised gardening that people who join up can benefit from,” he said.
