A $100m hospital that is the first stage of a massive development to cater for a booming southwest Sydney region will soon see its first patients.

Construction began on The George Centre, Gregory Hills, in September 2021 and is set to open its doors in June this year.

Located on the corner of Gregory Hills Drive and The Hermitage Way, the primary services at the centre include maternity and adult and paediatric surgery.

Chief executive Michelle Stares said one of their priorities had been the safety of babies and their mums in the new maternity unit, so it would have strictly controlled access through swipe cards.

“The maternity unit has four ultra-modern birthing suites and 26 rooms and will be led by our maternity Nurse Unit Manager with a team of midwives,” she said.

“We will also have K2 – a highly integrated monitoring system that is not available in any other Sydney-based private maternity unit.

“We have a number of specialist obstetricians accredited and will be commencing tours of the unit for mums-to-be in April.”

The latest data from the Australia Bureau of Statistics showed in Campbelltown there were 2474 births in 2021, and 854 in Camden. Meanwhile in Liverpool, there were 3125 in 2021.

The George Centre will also function as a day and short-stay surgical facility for adults and paediatrics.

The surgical services on offer will include general, colorectal, breast surgery, ear, nose and throat, ophthalmology, urology, endoscopy, bariatrics, plastics and gynaecology.

There are 57 beds, five operating theatres, two endoscopy suites, onsite medical imaging, an onsite pathology lab by Douglass Hanly Moir, onsite medical consulting suites and a pharmacy, gift shop and coffee shop.

The George Centre is anticipated to employ 100 people and also houses a large education area where regular classes will be provided to inpatients and the wider community.

Ms Stares said other existing private health facilities in the region were overburdened and unable to provide theatre list operation times for surgeons, meaning patients were required to travel outside of the area.

“The George Centre is located in the high-population growth area of Camden and caters to the needs of a changing population profile,” she said.

“It is the only private maternity unit in the region – currently, private maternity patients need to travel to Liverpool – a 30-minute drive – to a unit that is now over 25 years old, or Westmead or Norwest – which is 45 minutes – if they want to access private maternity services.

“The George Centre will not only provide surgical services but will focus on the improved health of the community through ongoing education in our bub-hub and education hive.”

Ms Stares said the centre would adapt as the region continued to grow.

“It is part of a larger planned precinct that is planned to include a research centre, cancer therapy and a large acute hospital – phase two and three – which would be adjacent to our hospital,” she said.

Ms Stares said the centre had been designed not to have a hospital‘s “typical clinical” feel.

“The ground floor and lobby have been designed around a community feel with sitting areas scattered throughout and landscaped gardens at the rear,” she said.

“The birthing suites are ultra-modern and include baths for pain management purposes.

“We have a highly experienced hotel services manager who will be providing fresh seasonal menus.

“It has the only private endoscopy suites in southwest Sydney.”
