A man who drunkenly ripped a burnout to “prove a point” to a group of people loitering in a shopping centre car park has been convicted in Picton Local Court today.
Adam John Sly, 37, of Tahmoor, had consumed six free-poured bourbon and cokes on a Friday night before he got behind the wheel of a Ford Falcon XR6 with another man at about 11pm.
Near the entry to Tahmoor Town Centre, Sly began to rip a burnout and continued the eye-catching manoeuvre into the car park before he stopped in front of a group of onlookers.
The father-of-three then drove away from the group before again ripping another burnout past a police car which had activated their warning lights.
Sly mounted a kerb in an bid to escape, but instead fishtailed and collided with a concrete wall.
He exited the Ford Falcon XR6 with his hands in the air.
Sly’s lawyer Stephen Maitz told Magistrate Ian Cheetham at Picton Local Court that it was a “one-off” incident.
“For quite some time (Sly) had been making come complaints to police about this group that had been hanging around that do burnouts and woke up his family several times,” he said.
“Ironically the police were there to patrol at this time.”
Sly was convicted of low range drink driving, driving in a dangerous manner and a sustained period of loss of traction.
He was placed on a Community Correction Order for 18 months and disqualified from driving for two years.
