Construction of a four-lane upgrade to Badgally Rd, at Campbelltown, is set to begin in April.

The upgrade will widen 1.3km of the road from two lanes to four between Glenroy Drive (former Dobell Rd) and North Steyne Rd.

The $5.76 million stage one project is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

Traffic on the road has increased since the opening of Gregory Hills Drive, and concerns have been raised by the Blairmount Public School community over the impact on student safety with the increased volume of traffic.

The road is a busy thoroughfare between Camden and Campbelltown.

Campbelltown Mayor George Brticevic said the Badgally Rd upgrade would improve a key transport link in the region, which is preparing for the arrival of the Western Sydney Airport on the city’s doorstep.

“Projects such as this will ensure that we have the infrastructure necessary to meet the requirements of our rapidly expanding population,” Cr Brticevic said.

The project will also include an upgrade of the existing lanes between Clydesdale Drive and Glenroy Drive.

Traffic lights will also be installed at the intersection of Badgally and North Steyne roads while the roundabout at Shetland Rd will be removed and access will be left-turn in and out only.

Other features include LED street lights, new drainage, new central medians and shared pathways.

Liberal Senator for Western Sydney Marise Payne visited the site in December and said Badgally Rd was a major arterial route in Campbelltown which catered for a heavy traffic volume.

Preliminary work near Blairmount Public School, which was set to begin during the summer holiday period, has been delayed until the next school holidays.

Cr Brticevic said work near the school would be scheduled for out of school hours or during school holiday periods where possible, throughout the life of the project.

The works follow the completion of the $509 million 5.7km Bringelly Rd upgrade, which opened last week.
